Happy Holidays

Editorial
When it comes to the end of the year, most of us usually evaluate what we have done, where we have succeeded and where we have failed. 2011 was indeed a year full of new experiences for us at Sauder Africa. Just to mention a few of them:
  • Ben Lightburn (MBA'12) and Julie Raworth (MBA'12) developed a business plan for importing goods to Canada in order to create additional revenue for our project (if you teach business, you should know how to do business, right?).
  • We delivered 2 new modules in Kenya, SE201 - Skills Enhancement and SE301 - One-on-One Consulting, co-created by Les Robertson (MBA'10) and Martina Valkovicova (MBA'11)
  • We plan to develop a new one yet in 2012, SE401 - Training of Trainers.

What also makes us really happy is that four of our dear 2011 team members: Steve Hosein, Phoebe Chen, Sophia Ho and Stephanie Fan are staying on the team in 2012. We must be doing something right!

And as for holiday season, Sauder Africa Initiative has already received the best Christmas present this year - a new group of passionate young people who will be part of 2012 team. Read more about them in the Program News.

Profiles
Kirby Leong was involved in the Sauder Africa Initiative for 3 years and was also the first MBA student to join the team - our MBA pioneer. He travelled to Kenya in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and was also the project Coordinator for over 2 years. He first joined the project in 2008, quite a difficult year with ongoing post-election violence and was the only student who went to teach with Professor Nancy Langton that year. Some of the 2009 students are still asking when is Kirby coming back.
He did not only make a great impression with the students but also with Strathmore University - they offered him to teach some of their entrepreneurship courses when he was in Kenya in 2010. Kirby currently works as a Community Manager at SAP and you can also follow him on Twitter @Kirberos.

Did you know? A Litter of Light: Solar Bottle Bulb

All the slums in the world are covered by tons of litter: flying toilets, plastic bottles, general garbage. Children play in it, some people burn it and many slum communities try to run garbage collection programs to keep their compounds clean. According to the 2009 census in Kenya, "an estimated one in five Kenyans uses the bush as a toilet – access to piped water covers only 38.4% of the urban population and 13.4% of rural residents."

Millions of people in the slums also live in the dark. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, over 2 billion people (2010) live without electricity.
But, in 2002 a Brazilian mechanic Alfredo Moser came up with a brilliant idea and made his first "Bottle of Light" during the power outage in Sao Paulo. Yes, the idea is already a decade old and it has taken some time to spread it around the world. We certainly recommend to watch this little video and read the article on what is going on with his invention. For example, MyShelter Foundation aims to brighten up one million homes in the Philippines by 2012.

Happy holidays!
As the next newsletter will be out in January 2012, we would like to wish you all a very Happy Holidays and may all your wishes come true in 2012.

Thank you for all your support and interest in our project, it would not be possible to celebrate and start the 7th year without you!
